Anafiotika: a journey to the dream

Anafiotika: a journey to the dream

What would you think of a walk into Anafiotika? It’s a beautiful summer day and I’m in the mood for a walk downtown Athens. A long way from the hustle of the city and yet so close to the Ancient Αgora. I take the train and alight at Monastiraki station.. On leaving the premises, itinerant vendors have spread their wares having created beautiful handmade craft, that will not go unnoticed.

Going up Adrianou str., I’m dazzled by a vast collection of monuments into Ancient Agora, the Adrianos’ Library and many others … Gazing upwards, an incredible amount of energy overwhelms. I stand at the foot of Parthenon and the feeling is wonderful! that’s why, the site has been impartially called ”Dominion of the Gods”.

It has already started getting dark and the huge sun slowly disappears behind the bustling Athens. At that time, I’m on top of Dioscouri  street and enjoy a beautiful sunset! The view from here is breathtaking and unique, while the mood can be relaxed and nostalgic.

I keep on walking the regional pedestrian and come across the first square of Anafiotika, near a tiny church. The time of day is dusk and the atmosphere up here is magical. A group of musicians have gathered together, play great music and end up singing together.

The last stop on my walk, the small square dedicated to the immortals. Next to small houses, I grin radiantly gazing at the lit up Athens and Lycabettus Hill … Up here you surely feel separately, one by one .. Past merges harmoniously with present…  You constantly having the feeling of being on an island, lacking the sea, but with lots of lights and a magical moon that carries you away…. If you dream to live up to the utmost of this special visit, at the heart of summer, come to Anafiotika district, for endless partying till morning on an island under the shade of Acropolis  …. Until we meet again have a nice summer ….
