Description

The exhibition showcases a selection of jewellery and everyday objects typical of early modern silverwork from mainland Greece.

Greek jewellery, in all its diversity, reveals a particular perspective on bodily adornment. Headdress ornaments and earrings, frontlets, necklaces and pectoral pieces that extended as far as the waistline, oversized buckles that covered the abdomen and bulky chain-linked pieces which embellished costumes, as well as pieces that adorn the back create a composite system of adornment aimed mainly to the creation of the impression of the wealth.

The materials used in mainland Greek jewellery are predominantly silver or silver alloy, copper and bronze, often gilded, adorned with semiprecious stones and coloured glass or worked with niello. Forged, cast, perforated or filigree items are often bulky, consist of many parts and are supplemented with various types of chains and even coins.

Objects of everyday use executed by silversmiths are just as elaborate as female jewellery items. The same techniques are used for sefer tasi (tiered food containers), tobacco boxes, flasks, bowls and amulets – many of which form part of the everyday lives of men.
