9th LEA Festival
The magic of literature from the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America
comes again to Athens from the 7th to the 19th of June

The Hellenic Iberian – Latin American Festival LEA (Literature in Athens) was born in 2008, due to the necessity of forming strategies covering a wide range of events with the aim to promote the intercultural dialogue among the countries of the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America on the one hand and Greece on the other. Its purpose is to introduce widely to the Greek public the literature and the arts of these countries.

During its 9th consequent year of its organization and having as an Honorary President the Greek author PetrosMarkaris, LEA Festival continues being the most important cultural event for the diffusion in Greece of the Literature of Latin American countries, Spain and Portugal. It’s not only a cultural meeting regarding literature but also a unique opportunity to spread the habit of reading.

From the 7th to the 19th of June in Athens and from the 16th to the 18th of June in Lefkada, the public will have the chance to enjoy, among other events, photo and painting exhibitions, seminars of literature translations, literature, theater, music and culinary seminars, music and poetry nights, features on authors, book presentations, lectures, interviews and round table discussions with the guest authors and personalities from the Greek cultural life. A wide variety of cultural and entertaining choices for all ages and preferences with free entrance to almost all events and translation into Greek.

This year, among the guest authors whose books have been translated into Greek there are: Raul Zurita (Chile, Gavriilides Publishers), Hector Abad Fasiolince (Colombia, Patakis Publishers), Santiago Gamboa (Colombia, Polis Publishers), Pablo Gutierrez (Spain, Kastaniotis Publishers), Juan Vicente Piqueras (Spain, Gavriilides Publishers), Marta Silvia Dios Sans (Argentina, Gavriilides Publishers), Jorge Galán (El Salvador, Psychogios Publishers), Juan Villoro (Mexico,Filyra and Koukkida-Portes Publishers), José Luis Peixoto (Portugal, Kedros Publishers) and Gabriel Calderón (Uruguay, Isuku Verlag Publishers). Other scholars, authors and poets, whose work hasn’t been translated into Greek yet, have also been invited: EusebiAyensa, Raquel Lopez, Mercedes Cebrián and Ada Salas (Spain), Alberto Cano (Panama) and XanathCaraza (Mexico, USA).

LEA Festival has been always keen to close its nights with wonderful music. This year, our special guests are: Alexandros Tefarikiswith his trio coming from Chile with a program of Latin American and Mediterranean ethnic fusion music; Juan Granados coming from Andalusia to give us an unforgettable flamenco night and JosepTero, coming from Gerona to present the musical verses of K. Kafavis in Catalan.

Worth mentioning will also be the presence of Greek musicians and musicians who live in Greece: the composer, piano player and vocalist MariosStrofalis, the Mexican vocalist Marta Moreleón, the Argentine composer and musician Roman Gomez, the flamenco singer YotaBarón, the Argentine musician and singer Herman Mayer, the harmonica spe-cialist Kostas Vlahopoulos, the double bass player YorgosRoulos, the Spanish flamenco guitarist Alejandro Chacón, the flamenco dancer Maria Mandragora and the Cuban musi-cian and vocalist Remi Mailan, among others.

This year the events of the Festival will take place in the Cultural Center Foundation Sta-vros Niarchos (opening ceremony), Technopolis City of Athens, StoatouVivliou, Abanico, Poems & Crimes Art Bar, Polis Art Café, Books Plus Art and Coffee, Athinais Cultural Multispace and Maria Tsakos Foundation (ending ceremony).

LEA Festival is taking place under the auspices and the support of the Embassies of Ar-gentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia in Rome, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Venezuela and the Honorary Consulates in Athens of El Salvador, Colombia and Paraguay, as well as of the Municipality of Athens. For its ninth year the Festival is organized by: LEA Festival, Sol Latino,Abanico and Maria Tsakos Foundation.
